Raw Celery Vs Cooked Celery

One of the best things about plant-rich foods is the many hidden medicines that are containing within. One of the vegetables that are very overlooked and underrated in comparison to the other well-known plants is celery.

Celery is a stalk vegetable that is in the Apiaceae family, that is in the same group with Carrots, Parsnips, Parsley, and Celeriac. Even though there are many options for eating celery, the best way to eat celery and keep 100 percent of all antioxidants is by eating the celery raw.

A study by LWT Food Science and Tech shows that boiling and blanching celery loses between 38 and 41 percent of essential antioxidants, and steaming loses 10 percent of antioxidants. Here are a few great benefits that celery provides when consumed in raw form.

Contains Antioxidants That Help Fight Cancer

Each stalk of celery contains antioxidants that help fight certain types of cancer, Apigenin, and Luteolin. Apigenin is an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant flavonoid that targets the cells to fight cancer, and helps decrease anxiety levels. Apigenin is in correlation to the floral flavonoid Chamomile. Luteolin is a natural flavonoid that protects the cells from damages such as Reactive Oxygen Species, and apoptosis in tumor cells.

Contains Essential Vitamins And Nutrients

Even though celery contains mostly water, it still has a nice amount of essential vitamins and minerals that can make a significant impact in the long run, especially if consumed daily. The highest vitamin level that raw celery contains is Vitamin K, which is at 30 percent per cup, followed by Vitamin C (2%), Vitamin A (4%), And Vitamin B.

Along with the essential vitamins, you will get a good dose of fiber and potassium as well. The USDA states that one medium stalk of celery contains 2% fiber and 195 milligrams of potassium, so if you have five stalks of celery a day for a week you will get 70 percent of essential fiber and 6,825 milligrams of potassium!

Helps Guide With Weight Loss

Celery can play a role in helping you maintain weight by reducing hunger. One cup of fresh chopped celery contains 1.6 grams of fiber in which, when consumed throughout the day, will help reduce appetite, therefore, maintaining weight gain.

By celery having less than ten calories per stalk, combined with it containing up to 95 percent of water, you can eat as much celery as you want and will feel full after a while with not having to deal with calorie intake.

One great way to eat celery is by having it as a midday snack along with some crunchy peanut butter. It will leave you feeling full until dinner time and will provide you with your daily intake of nutrients.

Provides An Alternate Form Of Hydration For The Body

With celery containing a very high level of water, it can be a great way to replenish your body and provide proper hydration. Celery can be a great snack to have during the summer, as it’s water content combined with the nutrients will provide a quick way to replenish hydration throughout your body.

If you are also in a place where no water source is around, such as walking through a forest during the summertime, having a bag of celery on hand is a great way to get hydrated and become full at the same time.

Celery Alternatives

If you don’t like the texture of raw celery or are looking for an alternative but still get the same benefits of celery, there are options available. You can take celery in forms of oil extract that can be used in dressings, sauces, and by itself.

Or in the way of celery seeds for medicine, supplements, and flavor enhancers for a dish. These alternatives can provide many powerful drugs and flavonoids that will provide aid towards many sicknesses and diseases.

Where To Buy Celery Supplements

The celery seed extract is an excellent alternative if you hate eating celery, but want the full benefits of it by eating it in a safe pill form. One of my favorite celery seed extracts is the ones made by Natural Factors.

It is 100% natural and provides 75 milligrams of celery seed extract per 1 capsule, which helps the circulatory systems combat the illnesses mentioned in the table above.

The celery seed extract is available in oil form as well, it will make the process smoother and efficient, especially if you’re sensitive to pills. The best celery seed oil extract to get is on Puritan’s Pride, and Healing Solutions on Amazon is the way to go if you want the same powerful benefits at an affordable price.

  1. Thank you for this great, very informative post. I’ve learned much, that I didn’t know before about celery. Such a powerful plant!

  2. Hi there,

Very insightful post. I personally can’t tolerate the taste of celery, so I was delighted to see that you included alternatives! Although I guess I could just include it in soups, I do like leek soup.

It seems to be a wonder vegetable that’s often overlooked. Also, I’ve yet to learn why it’s served with chicken wings, but I digress.

    1. Hey Sharon,

Yes I would suggest that celery seed oil would be the best alternative if taste is a factor. I’m not sure why it’s served with chicken however, I assume it’s because it’s easy to pick up and eat, also by it being a healthy alternative as a side.
