It is a new day, a new decade and a new era. The world of social media has changed the world in ways we have never seen before. According to WeAreSocial.com, More than 3.8 billion people across the world have a social media account of some sort, which will be close to 50% of the world’s population.
Social media can be a mix of both problems and solutions at the same time, such as solving crime situations and locating missing people, to spreading negative energy and drama which can lead to more serious accusations such as suicide.
But what about social media when it comes to business? Can the power of Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Pinterest etc. can make a positive or negative impact when it comes to business and finance? Well my answer is simple, and I will explain my opinion on social media helping businesses.

First off, I view a perfect social media account in three parts: 40% followers, 30% content, and 30% reach (search results). As the account matures, the percentage will toggle overtime, which will change the impact that the account has upon society.
For example, Lebron James Instagram account is the perfect social media account. He has a majority of great content with over a million likes per post, which comes from having such a high following. That high following will list his account as the first option when searching for his account name, which makes all three parts work together to make his account the perfect social media account.
Now let’s take his account and put it into business perspective. If he posts on Instagram promoting a small business in his hometown, the chances of that business getting numbers in regard to search and traffic is more than 90 percent.
By Lebron having a high following, those likes will more than likely transform into link clicks as well, which will lead to traffic production to the business that will then lead to more sales and revenue. I view this interaction as The Social Revenue Cycle.

The SRC is explained, in which the traffic (followers) from the account will lead to the business site when it’s tag or link is clicked, which then the business will be shared to other people if the consumer finds the business beneficial. The other people will then go to the original source of mentioning, which is the popular social media account, which will then receive the traffic from the business mentioned. You can use the cycle for all social media accounts and is depended solely on the number of followers the account has.

So, to answer the question “Does social media help businesses?” yes, social media help businesses in regard to traffic reach and sales. However, the only way businesses can profit off social media alone is if the account is highly popular according to the chart mentioned in the first section.
If the social media chart explained above matches the account provided, then the business mentioned can have a great chance of receiving those sales off of the mentions alone, especially of the account has over 500,000 followers.
The business will then be depended on the SRC. The more traffic received, the better chances that the received traffic will produce more new traffic for the business overall. Social media can help a business, that’s very true. I use Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. I have a Facebook account, but I seldom use it, I don’t like Facebook that much … 😉
If a highly active and famous social media account shares a link of your business, that is indeed a great boost in traffic and clicks. I heard that some influencers and actors ask to get paid to do something like that. I also heard that some famous or used-to-be-famous people offer to create a promotional video for your business in exchange for payment. Is that true?
Yes Christine promotional business is very common, especially in retired athletes. I don’t use Twitter that much even though I should be, I just don’t seem as it fitting as Facebook and Instagram. Either way any account that is considered “the perfect account” will provide great benefit regardless. Thanks for the comment I appreciate your input!
The social media does help business. It can generate unlimited traffic paid or non-paid if we use it well. It is a kind of art, I have to say. while among the 3 factors that generate revenue, I think the content is the most important one. A brilliant content/advertise, can not only generate the revenue but also capture fans. Social media, undoubtedly scales the traffic, audience, revenue and your business.
I absolutely agree Daisy, Good content leads to good viewership, which leads to good sales.
Social Media is a problem and solution all in one. It’s true that to make a profit on any social media you have to have a huge following. For the average Joe like us, we need to work harder to find followers. Once we have huge followers social media will work in our favor.
Social media does work it will take some time to grow our business.
Well said Kelyee!
I found this article to be both helpful and well-time for me! Dear Joshua
You are absolutely right to say that social media can help grow your business, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest.
I also think that they could be very frustrating also well especially if you are a new blogger and really want to succeed at what you do.
Frustrating when you don’t get the outcome expect from all the promotions you do.
And also time wasting if we don’t check yourself.
I think that sometimes, instead of spending time to create content, we spend time worrying about not getting enough followers and get discouraged.
Not to talk of the distractions too.
I would say, I have decided to balance things.
It’s good for business but in order to stay focused and not get caught up, we have to be disciplined.
I agree Ibi, it would make a lot of positive benefit if we used social media for the beneficial purposes and not recreational purposes, thank you for the feedback I appreciate it.
Hi,
Clearly, from the examples you gave, social media will help if a business is fortunate enough to get an endorsement from someone with a massive following. If you think about it all of this influencing and market messaging has been around for a long time. One very significant difference with the Internet is that you can move very quickly from receiving a first marketing impression to making a purchase action and then the link between the two is very easy for the marketer to track. Whereas, an impression from an endorsement in a magazine, or driving by a celebrity endorsing some product on a billboard may at some later time result in a sale of the product but it was always difficult for the advertiser to link sales to ads with any precision. Actually being totally honest I find social media to be mostly a waste of time. I like Pinterest because of the visual aspect. Thanks for this article. You explain how it works very well.
Best regards
Andy
Thanks for the input Andy I greatly appreciate it, I try to use my social media as free marketing as much as I can. I might not get enough responses if I just uploaded negative content, but I believe that in the long run once I gain a positive following, it will help by business and getting me the traffic that is 100% organic.
